DISPATCH: IN THE SHAPING BAY ~ JEFF MCCALLUM.

Surfer Magazine met up with San Diego surfboard shaper, Jeff McCallum, earlier this year to discuss his career as a shaper and the importance of handshaping high-quality surfboards. His sleek and unique board designs have been fine tuned for the ever changing conditions and waves here in San Diego.

I contributed water footage of Kahana Kalama to this piece.

DISPATCH: KAHANA KALAMA ~ VOL. 1.

This short film entitled, Kahana Kalama ~ Volume 1, is an introductory piece about Aloha Beach Club co-owner & Banks Journal Comrade, Kahana Kalama, his surfing, and how he splits his time between California & Hawaii.

Aloha Beach Club hosted the film's premiere earlier this month at the North Park Flagship where refreshments were supplied by Coronado Brewing Company and Guayakí Yerba Mate. There was also an afterparty featuring a live performance by Los Angeles based band, SPINDRIFT, at Seven Grand San Diego.

A big thanks goes out to everyone who made it to the premiere, the crew at Aloha Beach Club for hosting, & the Banks Journal team for supporting the film and event.

DISPATCH: THUMBNAILS: EPISODE SEVEN // CALLEN BUSCH.

Callen Busch began building handplanes out of salvaged wood during a flat spell in San Diego. The lack of surfable waves pushed him to explore new methods of waveriding. Over the last five years he has refined his skills and created dozens of unique handplanes out of beautiful, exotic woods.

In this episode of Thumbnails, Callen discusses his creative process and the joys associated with creating a one of a kind piece of functional art.

DISPATCH: "sa·cré bleu" ~ A SHORT FILM.

Last week, the entire California coast was gifted seven days of picturesque waves. Spots that have laid dormant for the last few months came to life in true form. Kahana Kalama and I made it a priority to get out every day while the swells lingered and we came away with this piece entitled, sa·cré bleu

Enjoy.

DISPATCH: TWIN PIN -TESTRUN-.

A few years back Kahana Kalama rode a twin pin shaped by local shaper, Jeff McCallum, for Kookbox Surfboards. We drove up to Lowers to film a little edit of its maiden voyage and the board ended up becoming a staple in Kahana's quiver.

Last month Kahana shaped his very first surfboard. Inspired by the unique shape of the twin pin model developed by the Mirandon brothers of La Jolla, CA in the late 1960s, Kahana tried his hand at creating a similar craft for the looming summer sessions at San Diego's beach breaks.

DISPATCH: ALOHA BEACH CLUB - GATES PHOTOJOURNALIST VEST.

Heavily influenced by functional attire of the past, our inspiration for the Gates vest comes from the desire to reinterpret the classic photojournalist vest. We wanted to keep the functional elements of this safari staple while slimming and lengthening the body. The result is a lightweight garment featuring 4 front pockets designed to keep all your travel essentials where you can easily find them.

The Gates is made in Hawaii from a water resistant cotton polyester poplin and field tested during hikes through the Ko’olau mountain range and impromptu escapades to some of Baja’s lesser known surf locales.

Details

Four Pocket Travel Vest - Tailored Slim - Available in: Sand/Natural & Military Green

Fabric Content: 5.46 oz Poplin - 45% Cotton / 65% Poly

Trim: Metal Zippers and Coconut Buttons

SESSIONS: BLACK'S BEACH.

Black's Beach in autumn is pretty unreal. The water is still warm and the waves finally start picking up on a consistent basis. This ended up being the last session I documented before the seasons turned and San Diego got noticeably colder. I'm definitely looking forward to days like this once these storms pass.
